Spider
This article is about the changes made to the spider in this mod. For the vanilla spider, see Spider.
Spiders are common neutral mobs that only attack in dark areas, or in retaliation. They can shoot webs as projectiles to trap players and other entities, and have unique group hunting behavior.
Spawning
Spiders have a 3% chance to spawn with a Baby Spider riding on top of them, creating a spider jockey variant with enhanced abilities.
Behavior
Spiders are neutral when the light level is 12 or higher, only attacking if provoked. In light levels of 11 or lower, they become hostile and will attack players on sight.
Spiders exhibit sophisticated group hunting behavior when multiple spiders are targeting the same entity:
- Role Assignment: Spiders automatically assign themselves roles based on group size
- Webber Role: Focuses on shooting webs to trap targets
- Chaser Role: Pursues trapped targets for melee attacks
- Flexible Role: Adapts behavior based on combat situation
When hunting alone, spiders will attempt to web their target up to 3 times before switching to direct chase mode for 15 seconds (300 ticks).
Combat
Spiders can shoot Spider Webs as projectiles at targets within 5-15 block range. The web projectile:
Spiders transition between different combat states during encounters:
When attacking trapped targets, spiders deal increased damage and have reduced attack cooldowns. They also apply knockback to push targets further into webs.
Animations
The new spider animations that correspond to their behavior states:
The default animation when the spider is idling has slow body movements to make the spider feel more lively.
Leg movement stays the same, while the body does a little more movement.
New animation that plays when the spider shoots a web projectile. The animation lasts one second with the actual web being fired at tick 17 of the animation sequence.
